I am VERY excited to announce that Dr. Marvin Berman and his staff loved us so much in January that he offered to present Biofeedback Part 2, for methods that can be applied directly to meditation and yoga practice. Come even if you missed Part I!
Using biofeedback instruments, it was shown that accomplished yogis, such as Swami Rama, could control body temperature, blood flow, brain waves, & heart rate, even stopping the heart beat for lengths of time. The fascinating field of biofeedback has developed over several decades to help athletes and other healthy people tap into the power of the mind to achieve greater potential and peak performance and help patients with physical and emotional illnesses treat their illnesses without drug therapy (and without side effects).
Dr. Marvin Berman, Ph.D.,CBT, BCIAC(EEG), is the President of the QuietMind Foundation, whose mission is bringing brainwave biofeedback into mainstream behavioral health care in the USA . He and his staff are making a special weekend presentation for the Philadelphia Yoga Meetup and will demonstrate several of the Brainwave biofeedback instruments they use in their clinical work and research programs.
3:45 pm - We arrive. Enter front door and walk back to conference room.
4-5:30 pm - Presentation and demonstration
Afterwards - Dinner at either Osaka (Chestnut Hill) or New Kimono & Sushi Bar Japanese & Chinese Restaurant (Lafayette Hill)
*RSVP REQUIRED by 3pm Friday March 16.* I will make restaurant reservations based on RSVPs. IN YOUR RSVP, PLEASE write "demo only" or "demo and dinner."
Types of biofeedback:
We will learn about other types of biofeedback, e.g., thermal, skin conductance, heart rate variability, etc. which can be directly applied to meditation and yoga practices. In January, we saw that with EEG biofeedback you can control brain electrical activity (brain waves). The waves have names like beta (seen when a person is awake), alpha (seen when a person is relaxed or meditating), and delta (seen when a person is in deep sleep). EEG biofeedback has been used effectively in athletic training and sales training and many illnesses, such as cognitive-behavioral & emotional disorders, movement & pain disorders, neurological disorders, developmental disorders, and addiction. Most people have permanent benefits. Common benefits are enduring increases in abilities to concentrate, focus, learn, remember, and make complex decisions. This is the one treatment that substantially reduced children's need for drugs like Ritalin.
