Chinese Yoga is for alleviating anxiety, a calmer temperment, increased focus, improved body mechanics to avoid injury, greater range of motion, preparartion for Kung -Fu defense. It is important that I emphasize that defense is for that purpose

Questions

Why self-defense?
Rape, domestic violence, mugging, racism are still around. We do not teach aggression or assault, only defense against it.

Do we train in forms (kata)?
Not much. Form training consist of never more than 4 movements. Light contact and scenario self-defense is the method and more efficient than kata

Can you just study the yoga and meditation?
Of course, you can! I am o.k. with those clients who just want meditation and chi-kung. You must have good reasons for learning defense-, very good ones--belts and tournaments are not a good reason!

Does the yoga and meditation relieve stress?
It is very helpful in this aspect. It does not work like a minor tranquilizer however. It can reduce and in some case eliminate the use of tranquilizers. You are encouraged to practice daily for even short periods.

Why teach the gentle aspect?
One looses by becoming violent .To preserve and promote gentleness and health are the highest moral goals. Too many kind people do little to really stop violence .Ultimately hiding, reliance on others, and continued fear will not work. I was a very timid undersized and awkward child. I was molested as a child and nearly raped. I grew up in South Jamaica Queens not Brooklyn Heights. There were gangs in my JHS. After sufficient training in chi-kung I went on to teach in some of NYC's most violent neighborhoods

Do you ever break a sweat or do real exercise? Yes I do. I do push-ups aerobics and bodybuilding

What was your training?

Meditation- Fire Lotus Zendo, Village Zendo, Omega Institute ,Don Ahn,Yuen Yuey Chen

Self-Defense- the following is a list of styles that I studied for either a long time or briefly (a few months) Judo /Jujitsu,Shorin Ryu Karate, Tiger Crane Kung-Fu with full contact sparring, Wing-Chun,Hsing I-Chuan, Tae-Kwon Do, Tai-Chi-Chuan,Kali-Escrima-Arnis

Are you a Zen Buddhist ?Where is your shaved head?

Yes but not a stereotype. I practice Modern Chan Philosophical Buddhism - a non- religious belief that does not overemphasize oriental culture as the essence nor even a necessity for practice. The use of any cultural aspects of Asia may be a pleasant window dressing but not the substance. My favorite writer on Chan or Zen is Alan Watts . He wrote in English and that is what I read. Under my hair is my bald - head! It is not a religion and therefore can not be imposed. The tea ceremony of Zen can be done with coffee! Learning Chinese or Japanese and listening to the traditional music, eating the food does not make one a Buddhist at all ! It is a universal belief that is admired by scientists and many psychologists

Is anything else taught?
Shodo -the way of the paintbrush
